Workplace Investigations

When a workplace receives a complaint of discrimination, harassment, or serious employee misconduct, a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation of the allegations is crucial. Not only will such an investigation reduce your legal exposure, but it will also critically enable you to implement any needed corrective actions to support a respectful work environment.

With decades of experience conducting workplace investigations, I bring a consistently warm and professional approach, treating every participant with respect, curiosity, and thoughtfulness before reaching my conclusions. My detailed investigative reports document each step of the process and clearly present my findings, giving you the information you need to decide on the next steps.

Higher Education Investigations

I regularly partner with colleges and universities to conduct internal investigations, whether it’s a Title IX matter or allegations of discrimination, harassment, or misconduct involving students, faculty, or staff. My approach blends meticulous fact‑finding with the discretion and sensitivity required in academic environments, ensuring each inquiry is handled promptly, thoroughly, and with the utmost sensitivity.

My investigations assist schools in protecting the rights of all stakeholders and nurturing a secure, respectful school community. If you’re looking for a trusted neutral investigator who understands the unique dynamics of higher‑education settings, I’m ready to support your campus in navigating even the most complex investigations.

Investigations-Related Trainings

Two-Day Foundations of Investigations Training: this class equips HR practitioners and other staff responsible for conducting workplace investigations with the essential skills and knowledge to conduct careful and thoughtful investigations. Day one encompasses the essential elements of conducting an investigation, like determining the scope of an investigation, standards of evidence, preparation and organization strategies, best practices for interviewing witnesses, credibility assessments, and report formatting.

On day two, participants apply what they've learned by investigating a fictitious complaint, allowing them to review sample transcripts, craft and practice opening admonitions, develop an investigation strategy, and draft portions of an investigative report. Participants receive a robust toolkit of resources and templates to use in their own investigations.

Don't Trust Your Gut: Evaluating Credibility in Investigations: This class explores best practices for assessing credibility in workplace investigations, moving beyond the common but unreliable advice to "trust your gut." Research shows that humans are poor lie detectors, often influenced by biases and misconceptions. We will explore evidence-based factors and techniques to more accurately evaluate witnesses' credibility to foster fair and objective investigative outcomes.
