About the event
In this class, we explore microaggressions: the everyday verbal and nonverbal slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based upon marginalized group membership. We will identify different types of microaggressions often directed at particular identity groups, distinguishing between intent (often positive) and impact (typically negative). We will also explore effective and practical ways to respond to microaggressions, whether you are the target or whether you are intervening as an ally to someone else, before applying these techniques to realistic scenarios that might arise.
